The Average Indian Man is Scared

I am the average Indian man. And I am scared.

There has been another brutal rape in Delhi, 2275 kms away from my home, and I am terrified.

I am worried as I type this down, for I am not sure what you will interpret my fear as. One wrong sentence and you are all over me saying how wrong I am to say what I am saying.

Why am I  scared? Cos' everyone simply hates me. The women think that every man out there is responsible for what happened and that men secretly think that whatever bad that happens to women is right and she deserves it. My fellow men think that I could be one of those men who would hurt their women. The public tells me to not blindly follow someone's suggestion, but to take a stand and do "something" to set things right. Social media tells me to stop shedding crocodile tears for I will forget the whole thing sooner than later and go back to living my life. But all that does not give you, man or women, the right to tell me that I shouldn't feel hurt or scared for what is happening around me.

But is this really why I worry? The answer is No!

Than Kopam Thannai Chudum!

This is a VERY long post. It is intended to be. This post really means that much to me!!!

"Than Kopam Thannai Chudum"

Roughly translated as "Your Anger Will Consume You", it is a saying in Tamil that is very dear to me.

As a kid (not as a teenager, but as a kid), I was very angry. I lost my temper easily and once I did, there was no stopping me. People really, really close to me now know that it has not changed much over the years. I am stil extremely short-tempered.

I was in the 5th Grade (living in Chennai at that time) when we hired a new maid. Her name was Indrani. She was really, really old and she walked slowly. But she was a great help and support to mom as Dad (like most Keralites of his generation) was abroad.

The Politics of Languages!

Disclaimer: This post was written back in 2012 when the situation was not as bad as it is now in 2016. This is now part of a larger issue with the displeasure of the local population in the amount of people moving into Bengaluru from other parts of the country. And is now a very sensitive topic. Please consider the following rant as something that was written with the year 2012 in context. It is not meant to hurt anyone at all.

I don't know why I am probably the last person to get this information (probably cos' I haven't touched a Newspaper since long now). It seems some politician in Karnataka came up with this genius idea that everyone who is in Bangalore for a year has to pass the VII grade exams for Kannada language.

I say, this is ridiculous. Don't get me wrong. I have utmost respect for the language, the city, the state, and its people! And during my years here, I have managed to speak enough Kannada (out of my own interest) to bargain at shops, with autowallahs, and to ask for directions. But do you not feel that this is a little extreme?

Oh! So you are a Shah Rukh Khan Fan?

Somehow, being a South Indian, my North Indian friends find it surprising that I even know a lot of old Hindi songs, maybe even more than they do. Thanks to my Dad who introduced me to the old melodies at a very young age. But that is probably the material for another post... Later...

So, the other day, while talking with a friend, I suddenly had a realization. The conversation was as follows:

"So, do you watch Hindi movies?" he asked

"Of course, I do!"

I Love My Job - Is That a Problem???

That's right!!! I love my Job! And I have no idea as to why that is a problem...

Oh yeah, it is a problem. For family, for friends, for everyone who knows me...

Not just my current job, I loved my previous job too. I only left it so that I can continue my education. For no other reason.

But from the very first day at my first job, I have had people tell me, "Don't spend too long at work. Then they will expect you to do the same always."
